Switch Gas & Electric is here to help people find the cheapest supplier of gas and electric. The cheapest supplier of gas and electric is dependent on geographical location and usage. We are independent so our advice is impartial and free!

How To Switch Suppliers

Most of us have many suppliers to choose from, regardless of where we live in Great Britain. You can choose separate companies to supply your gas and electricity, or you can choose one company to supply both - this is known as a dual fuel contract. It is usually cheaper to have a dual fuel contract.

How much will the new supplier charge?

All suppliers have to publish their prices. They will send you details of their prices if you ask them. To make sure you get the best deal, it is worth shopping around and making comparisons between the prices offered by different suppliers in your area. This service is offered by Switch Gas & Electric.

How can I pay?

Suppliers usually offer a variety of payment options to customers, such as paying weekly or quarterly, and paying by cash, postal order, cheque, direct debit or in a prepayment meter. The cheapest way to pay is by direct debit. If you have a prepayment meter we can switch you to the cheapest supplier in your area and you can then ask them to install you a standard meter so you are able to pay by direct debit. You may also want to make sure that there are no penalties for cancelling a contract once you have signed it.

Why Switch Supplier?

Millions of UK customers have switched their energy supplier since the market was opened up to competition in 1999.

If youve never switched you could be missing out on annual savings of up to £200 and the process of switching your energy supplier is far easier than you might expect.

A recent DTI investigation discovered that 90% of customers who switched their gas and electricity company found it easy. New rules mean that you now have seven days from the date you receive the written confirmation to cancel a contract.

The main reason customers switch supplier is to save money on their electric and/or gas bills. In February 2007 Ofgem issued a statement:

ENERGY COMPANIES HAVE A CHOICE: CUT PRICES OR LOSE CUSTOMERS.

It is usually cheaper for you to have your gas and electricity from the same supplier as this means you will benefit from dual fuel discounts. It is also cheaper to pay by direct debit. Some tariffs are only offered to customers paying by direct debit and are much cheaper than quarterly bills that you pay for by cheque or cash.

Sometimes your cheapest supplier may be your current supplier but you need to switch to a cheaper tariff. Switch Electric and Gas can find the cheapest tariff for you from your existing supplier.

Can I really save money by switching energy suppliers?

You could save up to £1000 a year by switching to your cheapest energy supplier. Suppliers are always changing their tariffs and prices so, regardless of which company youre with, you might still be able to save a substantial amount. You should check Switch Gas & Electric regularly to make sure youre still getting a good deal.

Will there be any interruption to my supply?

No. Everybody gets their gas and electric from the National Grid regardless of who the bill provider is. All that happens is that you bill provider will change so you can benefit from cheaper rates. Your new supplier will also contact your existing supplier to arrange the transfer of your supply. The only change you will notice is the company name at the top of your bill and less money coming out of your bank!
